Trellis posts are all checked for rot, and replaced if found defective. If this is not done, there is a danger of trellis' collapsing in high winds, thus causing damage to the vines.
Vines in their full growth cover a huge surface area, so the trellis has to be able to withstand the weight and force of the vines acting as a sail during high winds.
Growing wires are checked for any weakness.
Foliage wires are taken down toward the end of winter, in preparation for the pruning.
Perimeter fencing is checked for deer damage. Rabbit holes are blocked up.
Equipment is winterised. This involves getting the tractor serviced, the spray equipment serviced and protected against frost damage, the harvest equipment cleaned and checked.
Vine stakes are replaced where required.
